Rotovž Cutural Centre Maribor

  identity proposal — 2026
concept and authorship with Alja Herlah

The proposed brand identity of the Rotovž cultural centre stems from the architectural concept of connecting the historic building with arcades and newly built spaces. The Rotovž brand is artistically designed from the arcades of the old building and
the staircases that intertwine the new buildings and symbolically show the connection of contents and transitions between spaces.

For the promotion and distinction of individual institutions and spaces within the cultural centre (gallery, cinema, library, café) we prepared independent icons that conceptually follow the design of the primary logo. The forms come from architecture of the space and present symbiosis and connections. Furthermore, the modernity and efficiency of the forms and colors are gained through use. Each of the icons is drawn on a grid, and we have added dynamics to them with variability – they adapt to different formats.

With a range of uses we’ve established a thoughtfully designed and comprehensive identity that ensures long-term possibilities of continuous development within the framework.
For signage we put most thought and focus on space saturation. So, rather than placing additional infrastructure we suggest that existing one should be used sensibly. For individual events throughout the centre we proposed simple and portable wooden stands, which could be placed in front of the entrance to the space and stored indoors during the night. And for street signage the example shows a plate, which is attached to an existing lighting pole with cable ties and oriented correctly.

An example of central signage in the Rotovž atrium illustrates a pole on a concrete base, on which metal signs in the appropriate colors of the premises are mounted. If necessary, directions can be added to secondary locations (e.g. a sister gallery location on Strossmayerjeva Street) or other interesting locations in Maribor.

Lastly, we prepared some simple but colourful examples of identity derivatives.

[Proposal unfortunately didn’t make the cut.]
